Paddle-A-Thon 2012 - April 14-15
The Cause
Each year the Paddle-a-Thon raises funds for Camp Squeah's Summer Staff Bursary Fund; a fund established to help our summer volunteer staff return to college or university after each summer.
The Paddling
A 2 day paddle trip on the Fraser River, which begins in Hope and ends at Fort Langley. In 2012 the event is scheduled for April 14 &15. Paddlers will experience the serene beauty of the Fraser River up-close while enjoying one another's company. The floating convoy travels at a comfortable pace, accompanied by a Zodiac safety boat. You are welcome to bring along your own kayak or canoe. Or you can get a group of friends together and paddle in one of our larger voyageur canoes (10 or 14 people). See the links in the brown box for more information on becoming a paddler.
The Friends
Bring your friends or come on your own. Either way you'll meet new people and maybe even reconnect with old acquaintances. If you are on the water there's lots of time to enjoy the scenery and the company of those around you.
In order to make this event a success a large ground crew is required to provide support to the paddlers. So if paddling isn't for you, you are still welcome to raise money and contribute in a voluntary capacity.
The Food
What kind of camp event would this be without great food! There are a lot of donations contributed by local businesses and individuals from Hope, and throughout the Fraser Valley. Much appreciated, this helps keep event costs to a minimum. Hot, delicious meals are served at stops along the way, with nutritious snacks provided for energy while on the water.
General Schedule- what to expect...
The weekend begins on Saturday morning with put in at Hope. The paddlers take lunch on the water with them and the ground crew advances to set up the campground for supper. Around Chilliwack the paddlers regain their land legs while welcomed with a BBQ supper. After a hearty breakfast in the morning, the paddlers are off again, stopping for a warm lunch, near Mission and then back on the water for the home stretch to Fort Langley. Once the boats arrive at Fort Langley, the weekend culminates with, what else, a celebratory meal and a short program acknowledging this year's great group of supporters. At this point door prizes are distributed to our paddlers, and the grand total raised is announced, rewarding the paddler responsible for raising the most money for the event with the grand prize, a fully outfitted canoe from Western Canoeing & Kayaking!
Join us for this fun and worthy event this year. You'll be glad you did. And so will we!
